How remote players join an in-person D&D game

TableSync puts the DM's table online through a Cloudflare tunnel and gives the DM one link. A player across town opens it and plays from the same sheet, map and roll log as the players sitting at the table.

How does a remote player join?

When the DM opens TableSync, the DM screen puts the table online, which takes about a minute, and shows a link to send to players. A remote player opens that link in a browser and is in, exactly as a player in the room does. There is nothing to install and no account.

What is a join code for?

A Cloudflare Quick Tunnel's address changes every session. A join code stays the same: the DM re-points it to the new address and the player does nothing. The player enters the code at Join a session, and it sends them to wherever that DM is hosting today.

The join-code service stores the code, the address it points to, and a hash of the secret that lets the DM re-point it. It never stores a player key or a DM key.

What can the relay see?

Encryption ends on whichever machine relays the table, such as a tunnel provider's edge. That operator can technically observe board state, uploaded maps and character sheets in transit. This is true of any relay rather than a TableSync defect, and it is worth telling your players.

Does live sync work through a Quick Tunnel?

Yes, with a fallback. Cloudflare documents that Quick Tunnels do not carry Server-Sent Events, which TableSync's live sync uses, so TableSync notices a silent event stream within eight seconds and switches that window to long polling. An update then lands within about a quarter of a second. A named Cloudflare tunnel on your own domain keeps one address and carries events directly.

Questions

Can I run a hybrid D&D game with some players in person and some remote?

Yes. With TableSync, players in the room and players elsewhere open the same link. All of them see the same battle map and their rolls reach the same DM roll log.

Does the DM need to open ports on their router?

No. TableSync's built-in way online is a Cloudflare tunnel, which the DM screen starts for you.
