Using phones as D&D character sheets at an in-person game
With TableSync, each player opens their character sheet on their own phone from a link or a join code the DM gives them, with nothing to install. Their rolls arrive in the DM's roll log under their character's name.
How does a player get their character sheet on a phone?
The DM sends one link, or a join code of four to twelve characters. The player opens the link in any current browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, or enters the code at Join a session. The first time a phone joins it asks for the player's name once.
The DM then sees every phone by that name on the Game Tools tab and hands each one its character sheet. The sheet lives on the DM's computer, so the same character opens on any device the player joins from.
Do players need to install an app?
No. The browser is enough, on iPhone and Android alike, and a player can add the page to their home screen if they want it to behave like an app.
Android players can also install TableSync Player, a free, open-source app (a sideloaded APK, not yet on Google Play). It builds and levels characters offline under the 2014 or the 2024 rules, before anyone has a table to join, and at the table it is the same sheet as the web version.
What does the phone do during the game?
- One-tap attack, damage, skill and save rolls, with advantage and disadvantage. Every roll reaches the DM's roll log with the character's name, and the table view, so nobody reads numbers aloud.
- When the DM asks for an ability check, skill check or saving throw, a card on the phone says what to roll.
- Spell slots, hit points, death saves, rests and inventory are tracked on the sheet.
- A live copy of the battle map, with the conditions the DM sets and the turn order. On an Android phone, the phone buzzes when the player's turn comes.
- A Story tab with what the DM chooses to share: session recaps, wiki entries and the timeline.
What happens if the wifi drops?
The sheet says the table cannot be reached, keeps the player's changes on the phone, and sends them when the table is back, even across a reload.
What happens to the player's data?
There is no account, advertising, analytics or third-party SDK. A joined character is kept on the DM's computer; the Android app keeps characters on the phone. The Android app asks for one permission, internet access.
Questions
Can players use iPhones as TableSync character sheets?
Yes. Players on iPhone open the DM's link or enter the join code in their browser. There is nothing to install. The installable app is Android-only.
Does the DM see the players' dice rolls?
Yes. At a TableSync table every roll a player makes on their phone reaches the DM's roll log with the character's name, and shows on the table view.
Which D&D rules do the phone character sheets support?
Both the 2014 and the 2024 fifth edition rules, from the System Reference Document 5.1 and 5.2.1. Each character is built under one of them.
